Choosing your subjects is an important process as it sets you up for your future. 

To assist student and parent planning, study the Curriculum Information for details on the most appropriate subjects and levels according to personal skills, interests, abilities and potential future career direction.

Year 9

All students study all Learning Areas

Compulsory Full Year Subjects: 
English
Health & Physical Education
Mathematics
Science
Social Science

Compulsory Semester (half year) Subjects:

All students take six semester subjects:

  • one semester of Te Reo Māori
  • two semesters of Arts and 
  • two semesters of Technology

 Within Arts they select from:

  • Performing - Dance, Drama, Music / Visual - Visual Arts or Digital Visual Arts

Within Technology they can select from:

  • Design Technology, Design & Visual Communication, Digital Technology, Food Technology or Textiles Technology

 For their sixth semester students select from:

  • Arts - Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Arts, Digital Visual Arts or
  • Languages - Spanish or
  • Technology - Design Technology, Design & Visual Communication, Digital Technology, Food Technology, Textiles Technology

Students cannot repeat a semester subject.

They may be placed in one or more of the following subjects to support their learning needs: Literacy or Numeracy

There is the possibility of students who are Gifted and Talented being able to join the Junior Shape Your Future Programme.

Year 10

All students study five Learning Areas

Options:

Students are able to select three options from the following:

Animal & Plant Science, Business Studies, Dance, Design Technology, Design & Visual Communication, Digital Technology, Digital Visual Arts, Drama, Food Technology, Music, Spanish, Sports Education, 
Te Reo Māori, Textiles Technology and Visual Arts

Students may be placed in Literacy and/or Numeracy to support their learning needs. 

NCEA Level 1 courses are an option for students for whom this challenge is appropriate.

There is the possibility of students who are Gifted and Talented being able to join the Junior Shape Your Future Programme.

Year 11

Students select six subjects

Compulsory Subjects:
English, Mathematics and Science

Options:
Students select three options from a list of approximately 25 subjects.

All Year 11 students take the compulsory Numeracy and Literacy Co-Requisite course unless they have achieved these prior to Year 11.

Year 12

Students select six subjects

Compulsory Subject:
English

Options:
Students select five options from a list of approximately 39 subjects.

OR

Students may choose ‘Shape your Future’, an integrated project-based course including English and four further options.

Year 13

Students select a full course of five subjects and also have a 
study line

Students select all of their subjects from a list of approximately 43 subjects.

OR

Students may choose ‘Shape your Future’, an integrated project-based course, and three further options.

University Study

Further extension is available to students through University Papers. Usually this involves two semester (half year) papers or possibly a full year paper. This makes up one full option line. In exceptional cases, two option lines of University Papers may be taken.

NCEA

Levels 1, 2 & 3 - Senior students may select courses from any NCEA level appropriate to their ability.

Please note the preferred prior learning.

Alternative or more practically based courses are available in some subject areas. This range of specialist alternative courses includes a Learning Support programme. Timetabled and Supplementary Vocational Training opportunities are also available to senior students at NCEA Levels 1, 2, 3 and higher.

All Year 11, 12 and 13 students have one spell per week alternating between Mahi Tahi (Life Skills) and Wellbeing Programmes.
