Number 10

26 June 2001

Dear Parents

The end of Term II is upon us, the shortest day is past and we are nearly into spring and summer. Well, that’s how it feels to the Year 13 girls whose move into the "real" world is approaching very fast.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - Congratulations to Mrs Riley, Mr Johnston and everyone involved with this major production. For 2½ hours the large audiences were totally involved in a truly professional performance. The acting, the singing, the orchestra, the set, costumes, lighting, props – ALL built into a top rate performance very very cheap at $5 per ticket.

REPORTS & REPORT EVENING - Year 11, 12 and 13 reports will be issued on Tuesday 26 June and all parents are invited to discuss them with the teachers on Thursday 28 June 7pm – 9pm in O Block (the Original Block on Mangorei Road).

TERM FINISH - School will finish for Term 2 at 2.30pm on Friday 29 June, and will resume for Term III on Monday 16 July at 8.35am.

Have a great holiday everyone: it is important to come refreshed to the rigours of Term III & IV.

WORLD VISION SCHOLARSHIP - Congratulations to Maree Russell on winning a World Vision Scholarship for her role in raising over $10,000 for the 40-Hour Famine. Maree will spend a week in Wellington, living on Marae with the 19 other scholarship winners, having a chance to visit Te Papa, the National Archives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, Parliament , Ministry of Youth Affairs, and Government House. They will have leadership training and have the chance to meet the Governor General, the Commissioner for Children and the Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs.

She is also in with a chance to win one of three travelling scholarships which would take her to India in the September holidays.

Maree, Michelle Judge and Deborah Schwer were the leaders of the 2001 4-Hour Famine and gained enormous support for this excellent cause throughout the school.

FROM HELPING CHILDREN TO HELPING ANIMALS - A letter received from RNZSPCA

Dear Mrs Gaudin

I am writing to request that you extend my gratitude to your staff and students for supporting Melissa Muir and her helpers during the Animal Welfare Days held last month.

Melissa put considerable effort into organising the days, and as a result of her hard work we received a significant amount of pet food, new dog beds and a decent can opener!

We had about 2 days of food left when Melissa arrived and our dog baskets were looking very sad after being well used (and chewed) so the timing was perfect.

As our society is ineligible for Government or Lotteries funding, we must rely solely on donations and fundraising in order to continue our work. Therefore support and generosity as generated by these animal welfare days is greatly appreciated.

I appreciate the opportunity to address the school assembly and would be grateful if you would notify students that Muttley now has a wonderful home.

Yours sincerely,

Jackie Poles Smith,

Chairperson, North Taranaki Branch RNZSPCA

SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHOIR - Suzy Rowat has been selected for the NZ Secondary Students Choir and heads off for her first meeting with the group this week. We wish her well – and I’m sure it will be a great change from singing "Feed me!" as the man-eating plant in the Little Shop of Horrors!

CATCHING UP WITH THE NEWS - It’s great to see so many of our last year’s students back from University, full of excitement over their new studies, and especially good to catch up with Helen Kibby, and Jhana Bint who are home from their respective studies in the USA where they are on sports scholarships. The timing of the Musical was great and we saw a lot of recent past students there, and hope to see more on Tuesday from 5.30 to 7.30 at our Alumni Launch.

FIELDAYS - And we caught up with HEAPS of people at the Fieldays – prospective parents and students and many many people who have had connections with out school over the past years – from the 1`930’s to last year in fact! We share a stand with New Plymouth Boys’ High School and it gives us an opportunity to renew many friendships and build on our relationships.

And this year the weather was very kind.

And this year Carrie and Erin Lobb’s dad won the dog trials – the first time Taranaki has won, so we felt part of it!

NATIONAL INDOOR BOWLS - Danelle Gopperth was selected to play in the Nationals held in mid-June in New Plymouth.

PTA - Due to the holidays there is NO PTA meeting in July.

Again, have a great holiday; come back refreshed and enthused for the challenges ahead.

S J Gaudin
