Magic on beam nets gold
Waitara gymnast Nikita Mischewski is beaming. The 16-year-old has good reason to after winning gold on the beam at the New Zealand artistic gymnastic championships in Timaru.
Competing in Step 7 (they used to be levels, but have been renamed this year with Steps standing for striving towards excellent performance), Mischewski was the most successful of the Waitara gymnasts.
In the all-round competition on day one, Mischewski finished eighth on the vault, sixth on the bar, seventh on the beam and 11th on the floor to place seventh overall – enough to qualify for apparatus finals on vault, bar and beam.
She gave a faultless performance on the beam to win gold, was pipped on the vault by 0.20 to claim silver, and was seventh on the bar.
"The first day was okay. I finished seventh overall but it wasn't as good as I wanted," said the year 11 New Plymouth Girls' High School student, who has just finished the last of her NCEA exams. [stuff.co.nz]

Recognition for teachers' work
Two New Plymouth educators' leadership achievements have been recognised by talent scouts. The essence of the Woolf Fisher Trust fellowship is the element of surprise and it caught New Plymouth Girls' High School principal Jenny Ellis well and truly off guard.
Applications are not accepted for the prestigious fellowships and scholarships.
Instead the trust takes an interest in all schools and identifies educators based on both the school and the individual's achievements.
Ms Ellis was presented with her fellowship yesterday morning by a trust member and shortly after New Plymouth Boys' High School mathematics head of department Andrew Hope received his scholarship.
"The fellowship is a study trip and some holiday time combined over 10 weeks on full pay with the whole trip funded for myself and one other person to travel with for $40,000," Ms Ellis said.
Only two secondary principals in New Zealand received the award last year and in 50 years there have only been five recipients at New Plymouth Girls' High School. "It absolutely blew me away when I received the letter. I re-read it, re-read it and re-read it again.
"These fellowships are scarce as hen's teeth, so it really came out of the blue," Ms Ellis said.
As part of her travels, Ms Ellis will visit Harvard University in North America where she will complete a leadership course as well as travelling through Britain and Europe.
Ms Ellis lived in Britain for nine months in the early 1970s and is keen to visit countries she didn't make it to, and to explore Devon and Cornwall in England.
"A lot of New Plymouth's settlers were from Devon and Cornwall so I would like to try and make some connections there and visit Plymouth Grammar School to see what links we could have with them."
She said the fellowship was just as much about the success of the school as her own career.
"The trust has been watching the school for awhile and said they were impressed with the consistently high academic achievements that is a credit to the students and staff," she said.
Mr Hope's scholarship entitles him to three weeks' overseas study and leave, and will also pay for his family to travel with him.

Girls' High end top year with hat-trick of titles
New Plymouth Girls' High School Junior A claimed their third straight Taranaki junior secondary schoolgirls' (year 9 and 10) premier basketball title last Friday night.
Girls' High beat Hawera High School 75-58 in the final at New Plymouth's Francis Douglas Memorial College.
It capped off a stellar season for Girls' High after their win in the Taranaki women's reserve grade competition a couple of weeks ago.
After a tight first quarter against Hawera, the scores were level at 11-11. In the second quarter, Girls' High pulled ahead by 10 points and the South Taranaki side were unable to claw their way back into the game.
Erica Barr top-scored with 22 points for Girls' High.
Francis Douglas ended New Plymouth Boys' High School Celtics chances of claiming their third straight title.
The game was level at halftime, but after the Spartans gained a 15-point lead in the third quarter, the Celtics had their work cut out for them to get back into the game.
Louis Coetzee top-scored for Francis Douglas with 25 points, while Dane Brooks shone for Celtics also scoring 25 points along with 18 rebounds.
School tops in campaign Girls' High raises most for hungry
New Plymouth Girls' High School are tops in the province at going without.Students at the school raised more money than any other Taranaki school during the recent World Vision 40-Hour Famine.
An impressive $6150 was raised, with participants sponsored to eat nothing but barley sugars and juice, or make some other sacrifice for 40 hours.
NPGHS famine coordinator, year 13 student Jess Sinnamon, said being involved with the famine was a great way for students to learn about global issues and making a difference.
"A lot of girls do it in groups," she said.
"You don't have to do food, although that's good because it gives you an idea of what life is like for the hungry, but you can do really fun ones like doing relays or living in a box."
World Vision schools relationship coordinator Chris Jupp said NPGHS' contribution would feed 1537 kids in East Timor, where half the children are malnourished, for a year.
"The aim was for each student to raise $40, that would be enough to buy seed to grow food to feed 10 children in East Timor for a whole year," he said.
To be this successful, the whole school had to get in behind the campaign, Mr Jupp said.
"It really has to be part of the ethos of the school, and it is at New Plymouth Girls' High."
"Not only have the schools been working hard but the Taranaki Daily News has supported us by donating $1000 to the East Africa appeal by collecting 50c from each staff member every casual Friday," he said.
NPGHS also held a bake sale and a raffle to raise extra money.

Emily Roughan makes no race of goal
Athlete Emily Roughan's goal this year was simple – to represent New Zealand at the Australian secondary schools' cross-country championships. And she has achieved it.
The 17-year-old, who attends New Plymouth Girls' High School, is one of 16 New Zealand year 11 to 13 students who will travel to Canberra this week to compete in the championships.
She will compete in the under-18 division and is the first Girls' High student to qualify for the event. She is also the only Taranaki athlete attending this year.
"It's the first time I'm competing in it. It was definitely a goal I didn't think I was going to get," Roughan said.
She is the Taranaki schools' cross-country champion and, to qualify for the Australian event, she finished sixth at the nationals held in Ashburton in June. Over the three days of competition in Canberra, she will compete in a 4km run, a 6km relay, and a 6km run.
For the past few weeks, Roughan has juggled a hectic schedule of school, part-time work, and training but said it was not really a challenge. "I find it's more time management and just knowing what's important," she said.
Coach Karen Gillum-Green said Roughan had been training six to seven times a week in preparation for the championships.
"I'm pretty excited for her. She has quietly improved and is obviously very talented and all the work has come from her, I've only just guided her. She's the one out in the rain training," Gillum-Green said.
And although she's not eyeing the No1 spot, Roughan hopes to get something out of the experience. "I just want to do my best and try to beat the girls in my division," she said.
Roughan hopes to represent New Zealand at senior level and follow her dream of becoming a professional athlete.
"It's definitely something I want to pursue, it's not just a hobby."
